B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad

Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP 2.0)

B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad is a proud beneficiary institution under SSIP 2.0.

The Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP 2.0) is an initiative of the Education Department, Government of Gujarat, implemented through the Gujarat Knowledge Society and anchored by i-Hub (the Gujarat Student Startup & Innovation Hub). Running from 2022 to 2027, the policy aims to build a vibrant, student-centric culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across schools, colleges and universities in the State — taking young innovators all the way from an idea to a working solution, intellectual property, and even their own start-up.

As an inducted beneficiary, B. J. Medical College can now extend SSIP support to its students, interns, resident doctors, and faculty, and help turn everyday clinical and community-health challenges into real, impactful innovations.

What SSIP 2.0 offers

  • Funding for ideas: Financial support of up to Rs. 2.50 lakh per Proof-of-Concept or Prototype, released in progress-linked installments.
  • Intellectual Property support: Assistance with filing patents, copyrights, trademarks, designs and more, with support of up to 100% of filing expenses.
  • Mentoring & pre-incubation: Guidance from faculty and domain experts, access to labs and infrastructure, and hand-holding from idea to execution.
  • Exposure & recognition: Hackathons, workshops, exhibitions and state-level innovation events to showcase and sharpen student projects.

Idea-starters for a medical campus

A medical campus is one of the richest sources of innovation, because unmet needs surface every day in wards, OPDs, laboratories and the community. SSIP projects at [College Name] can grow from six especially fertile areas.

  1. Point-of-care medical devices — affordable diagnostic, screening or monitoring tools that work at the bedside or in the field, where lab access is limited.
  2. Digital health — apps and platforms for appointment follow-up, medication adherence, referrals and tele-consultation that extend care beyond the hospital walls.
  3. AI and machine learning for diagnosis — decision-support tools that help interpret medical images, pathology slides or triage data more quickly and accurately.
  4. Assistive and rehabilitation technology — low-cost aids that improve mobility, recovery and independence for patients and the specially-abled.
  5. Community and public-health solutions — practical interventions in maternal, child, rural and preventive health that reach people at scale. And
  6. Hospital systems and patient safety — simple innovations that streamline clinical workflows, strengthen infection control, and reduce errors in day-to-day care. Across all six, you do not need a finished product to begin — a clearly defined problem and a workable idea are enough to start the SSIP journey.

Who can benefit

Any student up to 35 years of age — including undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and doctoral students, interns, residents, and even recent alumni — is eligible to apply through the college. Ideas may address any field; for a medical campus, promising areas include point-of-care medical devices, digital health and tele-medicine, AI-assisted diagnosis, assistive and rehabilitation technology, community and public-health solutions, and hospital workflow and patient-safety improvements. You do not need a finished product — just a real problem and a workable idea to begin.

How it works

  • Submit your Proof-of-Concept / Prototype proposal to the Institute-Level SSIP Scrutiny Committee, with a faculty mentor. Download the template for application to the Scrutiny Committee here.
  • Scrutiny & sanction: the committee reviews proposals and sanctions support for promising projects.
  • Build & report: develop your PoC/prototype with the grant, updating progress periodically.
  • Next steps: move towards IP filing, a prototype, incubation, or a start-up.

Our SSIP Cell coordinates all of this and is happy to help you shape and submit your idea.
