Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, headed by Dr. A. U. Mehta, is a major tertiary-care unit at B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, with an annual postgraduate intake of 27 MS seats. The department serves patients from across Gujarat and adjacent states including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, delivering comprehensive care in maternity, general gynaecology and family welfare — including contraception and birth-spacing services.
The department handles between 8,000 and 10,000 deliveries each year, a large proportion of which are high-risk pregnancies complicated by cardiac disease, diabetes, antiphospholipid syndrome, hypertensive disorders, and hepatic or renal compromise. Annually, the unit also performs around 4,500 major gynaecological surgeries and 3,000 caesarean sections — including laparoscopic procedures — and provides over 80,000 outpatient consultations. The department was among the first medical colleges in Gujarat to introduce subdermal contraceptive implants (Implanon, from 21 September 2021), with approximately 600 implants placed each year. A fully functional Laparoscopy Unit supports major gynaecological surgeries including hysterectomy.
Infrastructure includes 240 inpatient beds, 15 dedicated delivery beds (including the MLCU and OLCU), 8 obstetric ICU beds, 9 operation tables and a 24×7 triage service. The department is organised into six teaching units and an RMNCH+ unit, staffed by 3 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 14 Assistant Professors and 27 Senior Residents, with a dedicated Assistant Professor in Anaesthesiology for the Obstetric ICU. It is accredited under LaQshya by the Government of India and operates within the NABH Entry-Level certification of Civil Hospital.
The department conducts RCH skill-based training for State Medical Officers, alongside structured in-house teaching for postgraduates, interns and undergraduates. Its quality framework focuses on respectful maternity care, surgical-site-infection control, timely triage, patient safety and family-centred counselling — anchored in a shared commitment to evidence-based, dignified care for every mother and newborn.
