Orthopaedics
The Department of Orthopaedics, headed by Dr. Himanshu Panchal, offers 20 postgraduate seats annually and is a cornerstone of trauma and musculoskeletal care in Gujarat. It is the only Government Medical College-affiliated hospital in India recognised by the Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI) as an official Fellowship Training Centre. Backed by modern infrastructure and a dedicated team of faculty and residents, the department serves a large, diverse patient population from across Gujarat and neighbouring states.
Clinical services cover the full spectrum of elective and emergency orthopaedic work. A 24×7 high-volume trauma unit manages complex fractures, polytrauma and open injuries using external fixators, interlocking nails, plates and minimally invasive techniques. The Arthroplasty service performs primary and revision total hip and knee replacements with structured fast-track rehabilitation. Spine Surgery handles scoliosis and kyphosis correction, spinal tuberculosis, disc prolapse, canal stenosis and spinal trauma. Paediatric Orthopaedics covers clubfoot (Ponseti method and surgical correction), developmental dysplasia of the hip and deformity correction.
The Sports Injury and Arthroscopy service performs diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder, ACL and PCL reconstruction, meniscal repair and shoulder-instability management. Deformity correction using Ilizarov techniques supports bone transport, limb lengthening and angular correction, while a dedicated infection-management service handles chronic osteomyelitis, infected non-union and implant-related infections.
Infrastructure includes over 200 orthopaedic beds (with dedicated female and paediatric sections), six modular operating theatres equipped with C-arm and power tools, a 24×7 emergency trauma OT, plaster and minor OT facilities, an orthotics and prosthetics laboratory, and integrated rehabilitation with the PMR department. The department serves over 500 outpatients daily and performs more than 100 surgeries per week. Academically, it submits 10–15 postgraduate theses annually and contributes to national and international publications, supported by structured teaching for both undergraduates and MS Orthopaedics trainees.
