The Department of Neurosurgery at B. J. Medical College and Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, headed by Dr. Jaimin K. Shah, was established in 1965 by Dr. Pradhyut Thakor. The Neurosurgery residency programme was the first of its kind in the state, started in 1985, and the department remains the only neurosurgery department in Gujarat offering the M.Ch. programme, with an annual intake of 5 PG seats. Over the decades, the department has trained a generation of eminent neurosurgeons practising across India.

The department is currently led by Dr. Jaimin K. Shah, Professor and Head, supported by a team of seven consultant neurosurgeons and 14 M.Ch. residents in training. Patients are referred from across Gujarat and from neighbouring states including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Annual volumes reflect both the demand and the capacity of the service: the department records around 14,800 outpatient visits and 2,640 inpatient admissions, and performs approximately 2,040–2,500 neurosurgical procedures every year.

Planned operations are conducted daily, and a dedicated emergency operating theatre runs 24×7 for neuro-trauma and other acute neurosurgical emergencies. A dedicated neurosurgery outpatient clinic is held twice weekly for structured follow-up of post-operative patients and long-term care. The department offers a wide spectrum of services including surgery for brain tumours, spinal tumours, vascular lesions of the central nervous system, and skull-base lesions. Endoscopic spinal surgery, paediatric neurosurgery and emergency neuro-trauma surgery are routinely performed using specialised modern instrumentation.

The department combines high surgical volume with structured academic training and research, providing M.Ch. residents with extensive hands-on exposure across the full breadth of contemporary neurosurgical practice. With state-of-the-art operative infrastructure, an experienced consultant team and a strong tradition of training, the department continues to serve as a major referral centre for advanced neurosurgical care in Western India.
