Paediatrics

The Department of Paediatrics, headed by Dr. Jolly Vaishnav, has more than 75 years of legacy and is one of the oldest and most pioneering paediatric departments in the country running both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with an annual intake of 18 MD seats. Based in the Women, Child and Super-Speciality Hospital wing of Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, the department provides comprehensive, round-the-clock care to children from Gujarat and neighbouring states.

As the apex paediatric centre for the state, the department records over 87,000 outpatient visits and more than 19,000 inpatient admissions annually, with care delivered free of cost under various Government of Gujarat schemes. The department operates the largest NICU/SNCU in the state, with 120 beds dedicated to critically ill newborns from across Gujarat and adjacent states; ventilator support, non-invasive ventilation and surfactant therapy are all provided without charge. Inpatient capacity for older children includes 210 paediatric beds, of which 30 are Level-III PICU beds, alongside 15 beds in a dedicated Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre for children with severe acute malnutrition.

Outpatient services run daily, with a range of speciality and super-speciality clinics held from Monday to Saturday. The department established the State Resource Centre for Facility-Based Newborn Care (FBNC) in 2019 and, in 2025, launched a Human Milk Bank to support the nutrition and survival of preterm and sick neonates. As the State Newborn Centre of Excellence, the department conducts structured training programmes — FBNC, BEMOC, F-IMNCI, Kangaroo Mother Care, basic and advanced neonatal resuscitation, and basic and advanced life support — for paediatricians, medical officers, staff nurses and faculty from across Gujarat.

Guided by the goals of high-quality, cost-effective treatment and active engagement with national health programmes, the department continues to work towards reducing neonatal, infant and under-five mortality while shaping the next generation of paediatricians.
