The Department of Biochemistry, headed by Dr. Asha Khubchandani, is situated on the first floor of B. J. Medical College and supports teaching across MBBS, MD Biochemistry (3 PG seats per year), DMLT, BPT, BOT and B.Sc. Nursing programmes. The department has successfully implemented the NMC’s Competency-Based Medical Education curriculum at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The department operates a 24×7 high-throughput Clinical Biochemistry laboratory at the 1200-bed Multi-Speciality Hospital and Trauma Centre, along with an OPD sample-collection centre. NABL accredited since 2009 and aligned with ISO 15189:2022, the laboratory processes more than 2,000 samples and performs 8,000–12,000 tests every day, all free of cost to patients. It is also the only laboratory at B. J. Medical College that runs round-the-clock point-of-care testing, including Arterial Blood Gas analysis.

Academic achievements are a point of pride. Undergraduate students of B. J. Medical College recently secured first place at the national biochemistry quiz “Energetics 2025”, and have won the state-level UG Biochemistry Quiz on two occasions. Postgraduate students have presented prize-winning papers and posters at state and national conferences. An ICMR-funded research project has been sanctioned under the guidance of Dr. Pratik Raghavani.

With its combination of accredited diagnostic services, strong academic performance and active research engagement, the Department of Biochemistry serves both as a vital clinical-support service for the hospital and as a learning hub for the next generation of medical and paramedical professionals.
