Pulmonary Medicine
The Department of Pulmonary Medicine, headed by Dr. Nalin T. Shah, offers 10 NMC-recognised MD Respiratory Medicine seats annually and is the Nodal DR-TB Centre for the State of Gujarat — a role it has held since 2007 — providing diagnosis, treatment and long-term follow-up for patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis.
The department offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for respiratory illness. Tuberculosis services include a Designated Microscopy Centre with integrated DOT, CBNAAT, First- and Second-Line Line Probe Assays, Liquid Culture and Drug Sensitivity Testing, and a dedicated MDR/XDR-TB clinic. Imaging support includes onsite chest X-ray and CT-guided and USG-guided biopsy facilities. Procedural services cover bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, thoracocentesis and intercostal-tube insertion. Pulmonary function testing, pulmonary rehabilitation and chest physiotherapy round out the diagnostic and supportive-care portfolio.
An 8-bedded Intensive Respiratory Care Unit provides 24×7 doctor and nursing care, with invasive and non-invasive ventilation, endotracheal intubation, defibrillation, multi-parameter monitoring, pulse oximetry, central oxygen and suction support, and bedside imaging. Indoor facilities include separate non-TB male and female wards, dedicated TB male and female wards, an MDR-TB ward, an emergency ward and the respiratory ICU.
A major recent milestone is the initiation of the BPaLM regimen for treatment of MDR-TB in March 2025. The department also delivers the Shorter Oral Regimen, the All-Oral Longer Regimen and drug-sensitive TB treatment in alignment with national programme guidelines.
Postgraduate teaching is supported by a departmental library, audio-visual classroom and structured academic activities including ward rounds, bedside teaching, clinical case presentations, seminars, journal clubs, clinico-pathological correlations, dissertation guidance and death-audit meetings. Together, these elements make the department a state referral centre for advanced respiratory care, drug-resistant TB management and academic respiratory medicine.
