Affiliation with Gujarat University

Gujarat University, established on 23 November 1949 under the Gujarat University Act, is the largest and oldest university in the state of Gujarat. Conceived as far back as the 1920s by visionaries including Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Kasturbhai Lalbhai, the university came into formal existence after Indian independence as a teaching and affiliating institution under the Government of Bombay.

It is accredited A+ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), and its motto — Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam (“Excellence in action is Yog”) — reflects its commitment to purposeful and quality-driven education. Spread across a 270-acre urban campus in Navarangpura, Ahmedabad, the university caters to more than two lakh students across 235 affiliated colleges, 34 postgraduate university departments, and 221 postgraduate centres.

B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, has been affiliated with Gujarat University since 1951 for undergraduate (MBBS) courses, and since 1956 for postgraduate (MD/MS/DM/MCh) courses — making ours one of the university’s oldest and most enduring institutional associations. All examinations, enrolments, and degree conferment are conducted under the authority of Gujarat University, ensuring that standards of assessment and qualification remain consistent with the highest benchmarks in higher education.

The university’s Faculty of Medicine, under which B. J. Medical College operates, has played a central role in shaping medical education in Gujarat and continues to provide the academic governance framework within which our programmes are delivered.

Over seven decades this affiliation has supported the training of thousands of medical professionals who today serve communities across Gujarat, India, and the world. We are proud to be one of the flagship medical institutions under Gujarat University — and to carry forward a shared legacy of academic excellence, public service, and the pursuit of medical knowledge.

Recognition by the National Medical Commission (NMC)

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is India’s apex statutory body for the regulation of medical education and practice, established on 25 September 2020 under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, replacing the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI).

The NMC operates under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and comprises four autonomous boards: the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB), the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), and the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB).

Its mandate includes granting recognition to medical qualifications, accrediting medical institutions, prescribing minimum standard requirements for medical colleges, maintaining a national register of medical practitioners, and ensuring that medical education across India is transparent, accountable, and of the highest quality.

B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, holds NMC recognition for its MBBS programme with an annual intake of 250 students, as well as for postgraduate courses across 24 branches and super-specialty courses across 11 branches — a recognition maintained without interruption for over five decades.

Compliance with NMC’s Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR) is a continuous institutional responsibility, and the college fulfils its obligations of public disclosure under MSR Clause B.1.11 — details of which are available on this website.

The NMC’s Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, and the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum, form the academic backbone of the MBBS programme at B. J. Medical College.
