The Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at B. J. Medical College and Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, headed by Dr. Jayesh Sachde, is one of the leading centres for comprehensive burns management and reconstructive surgery in Gujarat. With an annual intake of 4 M.Ch. seats in Plastic Surgery, the department combines high-volume tertiary-care clinical work with structured postgraduate training.

The department manages a wide spectrum of cases, ranging from acute burn injuries to complex reconstructive surgeries for trauma, congenital anomalies, post-burn deformities, microvascular reconstruction and reconstructive procedures for leprosy-related deformities. The dedicated burns unit is equipped with modern facilities and provides round-the-clock intensive care for patients with thermal, electrical and chemical burns. An advanced Skin Bank, established by the department, plays a crucial role in the management of major burns through skin grafting and tissue reconstruction — significantly improving outcomes in severe cases.

The department has been at the forefront of disaster response on several occasions. It has played a central role in the management of burns victims following major incidents, including the 2008 bomb blasts in Ahmedabad and the air crash incident of 2025.
