Radiology
The Department of Radiology, headed by Dr. Shital Patel, was established at Civil Hospital in 1954 and today offers 30 postgraduate seats annually. It is one of the largest and busiest imaging departments in the country, delivering a complete range of diagnostic services across the OPD building, Trauma Centre, G1–G2 wards and the 1200-bed hospital building of Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad. All imaging services are provided free of cost to eligible patients, particularly those from economically weaker sections, in line with the institution’s tertiary-care, public-service mandate.
The department is equipped with advanced imaging infrastructure. CT services include three 128-slice CT scanners (in the Trauma Centre, G2 ward and 1200-bed hospital) and a 16-slice CT scanner, supported by two 1.5 Tesla MRI systems. Additional facilities include digital X-ray with mammography and image-intensifier television (IITV), five high-resolution ultrasound machines with colour Doppler, portable X-ray and ultrasound units for ICU and ward-side imaging, and a PACS system for archival and reporting. Specialist services include 24×7 emergency imaging cover, interventional radiology, fetal-medicine ultrasound and image-guided interventions.
The department has supported several focused public-health initiatives, including a three-year breast-cancer screening programme using mammography and sonography conducted each October, and an ongoing pre-eclampsia screening programme in early pregnancy aimed at risk stratification and reducing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality.
Academically, the department runs the MD Radiology postgraduate programme with structured training in reporting, ultrasound scanning and interventional techniques, supported by weekly case discussions, film-reading sessions, CMEs and student seminars. It also delivers lectures and clinical postings to MBBS students and structured teaching to paramedical learners, including BPT, MPT students and X-ray technicians. Research focuses on fetal medicine, TB imaging and oncology, with regular peer-reviewed publications and interdisciplinary collaborations with Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Surgery.
