Ophthalmology
The M. & J. Institute of Ophthalmology, directed by Dr. Swati Devanhalli, is a premier tertiary eye-care and teaching institute affiliated to B. J. Medical College and Gujarat University. It offers postgraduate training through the M.S. Ophthalmology programme with an annual intake of 30 seats, and is also an examination centre for the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO). The institute began as a small ophthalmic ward at Civil Hospital, was formally established in 1952, attained the status of a Western Regional Institute in 1968 and became semi-autonomous in 1984.
The institute provides comprehensive primary, secondary and tertiary eye care. Outpatient services handle a wide range of conditions including infections, vitamin A deficiency, refractive errors and minor ocular injuries, while specialty referrals from smaller centres are managed in depth by dedicated subspecialty units. The D. E. Anklesaria Eye Bank and Cornea Clinic, established in 1968, offers 24-hour central eye-banking services along with corneal transplantation, amniotic membrane transplantation, sutureless conjunctival grafts and corneal collagen cross-linking.
Dedicated subspecialty clinics cover Retina (diagnostic imaging, laser treatment, vitrectomy, intraocular foreign-body removal, and management of retinopathy of prematurity), Glaucoma (screening, laser procedures and drainage-implant surgery for refractory cases), Squint and Ocular Motility, Oculoplasty (including ocular tumours), Paediatric Ophthalmology, and a Low Vision Aid clinic for visual rehabilitation. Supporting wings in ocular pathology, microbiology, physiology, histopathology and anaesthesia enable comprehensive evaluation and safe surgical care.
The institute runs an active community outreach programme, with regular diagnostic eye camps, school eye-screening, glaucoma awareness drives and eye-donation awareness initiatives in remote rural areas. Satellite centres operate at the Mental Hospital, Delhi Darwaja and the Central Jail, Sabarmati. Academic activities include structured postgraduate teaching, clinical case discussions, seminars, journal clubs, wet-lab training, workshops, CMEs and ongoing research — making the institute a leading hub for ophthalmic care, training and innovation in Western India.
