DEPARTMENT OF IMMUNOHAEMATOGY & BLOOD TRANSFUSIO

1.GOAL:

The goal of Immunohaematology & Blood Transfusion/Transfusion Medicine is to provide comprehensive training in all aspects of blood banking including related National policy, regulation & guideline, Blood transfusion practice and stem cell therapy to the post graduate student to achieve competence and expertise that will allow the resident to function as a blood bank/transfusion medicine expert.This is achieved through three years of study.

2.OBJECTIVES :

To create awareness regarding safe and judicious use of blood among the clinicians and to promote voluntary blood donation in the society.

3.HEAD OF DEPARTMENT'S MESSAGE:

The department of Immunohaematology & Blood Transfusion was made as an offshoot or a specialization from the branch of Pathology in 2005, in order to provide didactic education & practical training in all aspects of blood transfusion technology, to develop the knowledge required to analyze Immunohaematological problems, to provide experience in blood centre policies such as donor recruitment, collection, preservation, administration of blood & blood components and to educate other medical personnels regarding the judicious use of blood.

The department of Immunohaematology & Blood Transfusion is recognized byMedical Council of India and is the fourth centre in India to start a postgraduate course in the subject. Every year 2 post graduate students are admitted to the course. This sort of a centre was the need of the hour for the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad with attached medical college, where all speciality and superspeciality courses are running. The department of IHBT (Blood Cent) is essential for the Medical College to run different types of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The department is situated in B-2 ward of Civil Hospital covering an area of approximately 6000 sq ft.

The blood bank has been allottedMODEL BLOOD BANKstatus byNACOand is aTraining Centrefor Blood Bank Medical Officers, Technicians, Nursing Staff, Counselors as well as Blood Storage Centre staff.

It is theFIRST GOVERMENT BLOOD BANK IN THE COUNTRY TO ACHIEVE NABH Accreditationin 2010.

It is my humble request to all to donate blood regularly at our centre so that needy patients of Civil Hospital never ever feel the shortage of blood.

4.FACILITIES IN THE DEPARTMENT

The following facilities are available in the department:

  1. Blood grouping and antibody screening of all patients coming to Civil Hospital.
  2. Bleeding of donors (Voluntary & Replacement).
  3. Testing of all blood units according to the 5 mandatory tests as guided by the FDA i.e.HIV I & II, HCV, HBsAg, tests for syphilis and peripheral smear for malarial parasite.
  4. Component preparation & storage –
  • Red cell concentrate ( PCV )
  • Platelet concentrate ( PC )
  • Fresh frozen plasma ( FFP )
  • Cryoprecipitate
  • Saline washed red cells
  • Leuco reduced red cells

5.Compatibility testing and issue of blood & blood components as per demand

  1. Issue of packed red cells to thalassemia patients.
  2. Issue of fresh frozen plasma (for factors) to hemophiliac patients.
  3. Conducting Voluntary blood donation camps.
  4. Direct and Indirect Coomb’s test.
  5. Newborn baby grouping.
  6. Apheresis/ Plasma exchange/Red cell exchange/ Plateletpheresis procedures

6.EXAMINATION PATTERN

Gujarat University conducts Theory and Practical examination every year in April-May.
