HISTORY:

The Department of Pathology of the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad was established in the year 1946 and has been recognized by MCI since 1948, is one of the pillars for diagnostic work at the Civil Hospital. The Department consists of different sub laboratories such as Surgical Pathology, Haematology and Clinical Pathology, OPD Pathology laboratory, Emergency laboratory, Cytology Pathology laboratory and Autopsy laboratory. The Department has one of the best museum. (752 specimen - mounted and wet) and teaching sections for Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Paramedical students. The Department consists of a Professor and Head, one Professor, five Associate Professors, eight Assistant Professors and 14 Tutors. There is an annual intake of  28 Residents  every year  for the Post Graduate degree course in Pathology. Each sub-section has separate paramedical staff to support

The Department started F.N.A.C. services for early cancer detection before 25 years i.e, first in Gujarat. The Department has high-tech laboratory with latest equipmentThe Pathology Department has been accredited by NABL, ISO 15189 since 2010. It is one of the first Pathology Department among all government run health service delivery set up in Gujarat having accreditation for over highest 107 scope for pathology tests.

The Department is having Laboratory Information System (LIS) - the best software program for daily reporting, quality management, inventory and maintenance of the laboratories, since 5 years. The LIS is connected to all laboratory services (i.e. Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry). The LIS also provides tremendous opportunities for academic and research actions.  The HIMS is linked with LIS so doctors can access patients' reports instantly.

We also have setup a COVID  during the First Wave and the lab was totally allocated to  COVID patients. Approximately 336072+ tests are run till date (i.e 31/12/21).

31 COVID Autopsies have been conducted in our autopsy department till date(31/12/2021).

GOAL:

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT :

Pathology is fundamentally clinical knowledge service for modern medical practice and health care.

Diagnosis based on pathological tests is essential for prevention, early detection, clinical procedure and treatment for health challenges.

Pathology is the backbone for medicine, surgery, paediatrics and gynaecology for understanding clinical subjects. Practitioners should be well versed with the basic pathology of diseases to conclude and treat various diseases.

Our civil hospital is one of the largest and oldest tertiary care centre and teaching institute spread in 110 acres land with OPD of 10 lack patients per year and more than 1 lack indoor admissions per year.

It was in 2008 that we started to get accreditation of our laboratory from NABL. I am proud that In 2010 Our Laboratory services under one roof as per ISO-15189-2012 got the certificate of accreditation for Quality, Speedy and accurate reports for Clinicians to conclude and render fast, best and effective treatment to our patients.
