Pathology

Significance

      Pathology is a fundamental clinical knowledge service for modern medical practice and health care. The diagnosis based on pathological tests are essential for prevention, early detection, clinical procedures and consultation for treatment of key public health challenges.

Goal

      To provide students comprehensive knowledge of the mechanisms and causes of the disease in order to enable them in achieving in-depth understanding of the natural history and clinical manifestations, evidence and end result of disease in terms of repair or cure, complications and consequences.

Vision

      To be centre of excellence providing best medical education facility and best patient health care facilities together with emphasis on preventive aspects of diseases.

Mission

      To create an environment where all three core missions of academics i.e. medicine teaching, research and clinical excellence interact to deliver highest level of patient care and medical innovations through accessible, cost-effective, high-quality, comprehensive and preventive health by highly competent and compassionate professionals to ensure equal access for all people, particularly those who are most needy, poor, and vulnerable resulting in best patient/user satisfaction.

Recognition and Achievements

• First in Gujarat to start FNAC services for early cancer detection since 1988.
• Accredited by NABL as per ISO 15189, since 2010 and first pathology department in Government Public Health care facility having accreditation for over 107 tests and increasing with each Re-Assessment. Total 6 Faculties of pathology department are NABL accessor. Recently successfully completed NABL reassessment in April 2025
• Awarded for SKOCH order of merit in December 2015, for Laboratory Information System.
• First Ph.D. in pathology in Gujarat state - 2018.

• Pathology department organised 1^st time State level Undergraduate Pathology quiz “Inquizita 2018”.
• Department of Pathology successfully hosted All Gujarat Scientific Conclave of Pathologists & Microbiologists with more than 650 registrations from Gujarat State. -2018
• DM Onco-Pathology course started in GCRI which is affiliated with BJ Medical College. First super-specialty (Post-M.D) Pathology course in Gujarat with highest annual intake (08)-2019
• Spectacularly successful AIICME 2020 25th ICP-AIPNA  International CME with 763 registration- Highest number of registrations in the history of AIPNA-ICP very first time in India-2020.There were 13 international speakers and 14 national speakers from various prestigious institutions.
• Performed 31 Covid-19 Autopsy with morphological evaluation to know basic pathophysiology of the novel virus as a part of research Project-2020-21
• Our department is actively involved in Plantation Activities and has Developed a Sanjeevani Upavan Garden in Campus of Civil Hospital as a part of Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav.
• Organized Pathcon BJ 2025- Gujarat’s largest post-pandemic pathology conference with over 600 Registration received and 160 Abstract submissions received.

• State of the Art Diagnostic and Research Laboratory with all sophisticated and advanced equipment’s for diagnostic excellence in patient care.
• Highly customized and Integrated Laboratory Information System with all advanced features facilitating a paperless, green lab.
• Paperless Quality Management System setup & functional since 2016.
• Online viewing / printing of reports from Hospital network facilitating paperless LIS Reports since 2018.
• Covid 19 Reporting & Integration with Covid-19 Daman Application facilitating rapid, contactless delivery of reports since 2020.
• Successfully integrated LIS with HMIS so that Lab reports can be accessed and printed from all wards and clinical areas of Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad.
